Fish from sustainably managed fisheries

In January 2008, Studentenwerk Göttingen received the Marine Stewardship Councils MSC label. It was the first time the ecolabel has been awarded to a German student union. As a consequence, most fish dishes served at our dining facilities stem from sustainable fishing.

MSC is an independent, non-profit organization that has established global environmental standards for fishery evaluation. The MSC label refers to environmentally sound catching methods of certified fisheries and has been designed to ease consumers decisions in favor of products with a certified origin when buying fish or seafood.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) helps those who depend on the fishing industry to support sustainably managed fisheries. Using the MSC label allows sustainably managed companies to prove to their customers that they follow model procedures.

Moreover, MSC promotes improvements in fishery management and provides independent proof concerning the traceability of sustainable products. The basic MSC mission is to reverse the global decrease in fishing resources, to protect the sea as a natural habitat and to demonstrate the economic benefit of sustainably managed fisheries.

The MSC standard complies to the International Guidelines for Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries as issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. This means it is based on sound procedures and on the principles of transparency, accountability and independence.
