  1. Who is allowed to reside in our student hostels?

Students of the University of Göttingen, students of certain departments in Göttingen of the HAWK Hildesheim/ Holzminden, students of the Göttingen private Universities of Applied Sciences and the students of the University of Kassel's consecutive Master's Programme "Sustainable International Agriculture" in cooperation with the University of Göttingen, are eligible for student housing.

  2. I will do an internship in Göttingen for 2 months and am looking for a room. Can you offer anything to me in a student hostel?

During the semester break it is perhaps possible to reside in a Studentenwerk Göttingen student hostel on a monthly basis providing there is no demand for rooms by students. The internship must be associated with the university. Please inform us of your moving in requirement (wvdorf@studentenwerk-goettingen.de) .The more advance notice we have, the better the chances are of being able to offer you something

    back to questions

  3. How do I get put onto the waiting list for a place in a student hostel?

You can apply online. You then receive a confirmation link per e mail which you must click on. Only then can we put you onto the waiting list. Only one application can be sent to us. Double applications will not be considered and will be deleted. Please make sure that the photo in the e- mail attachment is not bigger than 2 MB

    back to questions

  4. How do I apply as an Exchange Student (e.g. ERASMUS)?

Exchange students cannot apply online. Please contact the Accommodation Service (Gottingen International) of the University of Göttingen.

  5. How do I apply for a family apartment?

Families cannot apply online. Please use the application form for families. You can get detailed information at Student Hostel Administration Services 5, Albrecht-Thaer-Weg 6, 37075 Göttingen, Tel. +49(0)551 39-5162 or +49(0)551 39-10987.

  6. How do I apply for a preferred admission in a dorm?

Prerequisites: You are seriously ill, or have a severe disability and are dependent on facilities specially available in a dormitory regarding recovery, or to support your study and everyday life. For the application, you must present a valid certificate from a specialist, which indicates which specific institutions of the dormitory are required by you, or a disabled person's pass with a detailed personal statement regarding the special facilities of the dormitory which are required by you (e.g. barrier-free room). You can only apply for a preferred admission for one dormitory. Please send us your online application for one dormitory, enter your reasons for a preferred admission in a short version under "Indications" and send us the relevant medical report by mail or a copy of the severely handicapped pass with a detailed justification (without proof, processing is not possible!). In the case of applications for preferred admission, this is always a case-by-case decision. If your application is not approved, you will remain on the regular waiting list and you may expand your choice of dormitory by two more houses.

  7.  How can I change or correct my application?

Changes or corrections to an existing application, for example, changes to the personal data, the dormitory selection, the desired move-in date, etc., please give to the Student Accommodation Services including your personal number. A telephone or personal contact is an advantage. The waiting time already accumulated does not change.

  8. When should I apply for a room in a student hostel?

Apply as early as possible because the rooms are allocated in accordance with the waiting list. The earlier your application is received by us, the greater the likelihood of you getting a room. With your application you are under no obligation, i.e. you can withdraw your application at any time, be put back on the waiting list, or move to a different type of accommodation. After moving in please hand in your Certificate of Enrolment i.e. you can apply without a Letter of Admission from the university and a Certificate of Enrolment.

  9. What does shared accommodation (group apartment) mean and how do I get a room in such accommodation?

Group apartments are separate living units for 2 to 6 people. The allocation is based on a group of interested occupants coming together and applying jointly. Individual applicants cannot apply for a room in a group apartment. The composition of the group takes place without the involvement of Studentenwerk. If individual tenants move out of the shared apartment before the expiry of the tenancy period, the other occupants are responsible for finding replacements for the remaining period of the tenancy. As a rule this takes place via the internet and postings on university or hostel notice boards.

    back to questions

  10. How do we apply for a group apartment?

Only one member of the apartment to be shared applies. He/she then receives an applicant number in the e mail confirmation. Thereafter the other members of the group apply and must specify the applicant number underneath "Group ID" on the application form. An allocation is not possible without the specification of this number.

  11. Which types of accommodation are offered?

Single room: room with joint use of kitchen and bathroom.
Single apartment: room with bathroom and in part own kitchenette.
    Group apartment for 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 or 6 persons: 2/ 3 / 4 / 5 or 6 separate rooms with kitchen and bathroom (joint application by 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 persons necessary; also see instructions to group apartment).
Double apartment: apartment with walk through room or a big room for 1 or 2 persons (see student hostel overview).

    back to questions

  12. How do I get information about the waiting time, room size, the rent, the furniture, kitchen and bathroom use, internet connection, joint facilities, location?

Detailed information about prices, room sizes etc. can be found in the overview list of the properties on the homepage. Please contact our student accommodation services office or administration office of the hostel concerned by phone, in writing or by visiting personally.
The waiting time depends on the type of accommodation desired (single room, single apartment, group apartment), on incoming notices to quit, the desired move-in date and the number of persons ahead of you on the waiting list.

    back to questions

  13. Under which conditions does an application expire?

Should you not contact us in regard to our offers or letters within the specified time limit, the application will be taken off the waiting list and the waiting time up to then will be forfeited.
You will receive a maximum of three offers of dormitories. After the third offer has been rejected, the application and the waiting period will expire as well.

    back to questions

  14. How and when do I receive my tenancy agreement?

You receive an offer of a room. After signing and sending back the "Declaration of Acceptance" the rental agreement is legally valid. You do not receive any further acknowledgement of receipt. The tenancy agreement will be signed in the hostel administration office at the relevant hostel on collection of the key.

    back to questions

  15. Is there a minimum or maximum tenancy period?

The normal period of occupancy is 8 semesters. The contractual tenancy agreement may be terminated with a three month notice to quit (as laid down by law).
