Housing for help – Freie Altenarbeit Göttingen
On this page, we would like to talk about our cooperation project with Freie Altenarbeit Göttingen e. V. as part of "Housing for Help". Both parties, students and housing providers, benefit within a residential partnership by giving and taking. The advice and mediation are free of charge. You can find more information in our flyer (in German only).
Leonie Bosse talks about the project "Housing for Help" in her report "The Somewhat Different WG" (June 2017). Have a look at her report here (in German only).
Many older citizens of Göttingen live in large apartments and do not want to give them up. Nevertheless, they feel overwhelmed in their living situation, where even small assistance, such as support in shopping or gardening, carrying crates of bottles, taking the dog for a walk, would greatly improve their situation. Even families with children or working people often need help with their household tasks or childcare. On the other hand, many students in Göttingen are looking for a (reasonably priced) room and would be happy to take on regular support services for that.
Older people, families or other interested people offer a room for students, possibly also a flat in their house. For this purpose, a normal lease is concluded at an agreed reduced rent. In return, the students provide agreed assistance for the landlords. As a rule of thumb, one square meter of living space is one hour of work per month.
The arrangement of the residential partnerships is based on a concrete concept: personal contact, comprehensive information of the interested parties about the project as well as an intensive consultation and support of the students and the landlords are essential for successful housing partnerships.
Interested students should contact the service office Studentisches Wohnen of the Studentenwerk Göttingen and fill in an application form. The service office is the contact for first information as well as questions and they pass on the requests to the Freie Altenarbeit Göttingen e.V.
If you are interested in offering housing, please contact Freie Altenarbeit Göttingen e.V. directly and fill out the application form. This can be done independently, but also the volunteer housing consultants are on hand to advise. By appointment, they come directly to the home and answer any questions about the project. We have described the process of mediation for housing providers (in German only) in detail later. The short application for housing providers is available here (in German only).
Matching housing partners are brought into contact by the housing consultants. In a joint conversation, there is time to get to know each other, to clarify questions and to assist with the design of the housing lease agreement.
In addition, Freie Altenarbeit Gottingen e. V. is available for questions and advice at any time.
After successful mediation, exclusively landlords and tenants are contractual partners. It should be emphasised that Freie Altenarbeit Göttingen e.V. does not take over the conclusion of the contract, but merely advise.
