The starting point is an academic study at a university in Germany. Abroad, there can be a higher level of entitlement, at domestic schools a lower level.

Until the age of 25, a free co-insurance in the statutory health and long-term care insurance of the parents is usually possible. Thereafter, or if the parents are privately insured, contributions must be paid. Mostly the contributions increase from the age of 30 onwards for voluntary statutory further insurance.

In addition to one's own income and assets, the income of the spouse or life partner as well as of the biological or adoptive parents is to be credited. Under certain conditions, especially for several years of employment before graduation, BAföG may also be possible independently from the income of the parents.

If the parents are not married or live permanently separated, the income is to be counted individually. In this case, the calculator must be run twice to determine the total income to be credited. If allowances for siblings have been considered, the result cannot be used because they should not be awarded twice. The same applies if not all siblings are in the same parent-child relationship ("half- or step-siblings").

According to the BAföG, schools from grade 10 are eligible if the siblings do not live with their parents, or - regardless of living with their parents - schools which lead to a vocational qualification.

"Vocational assistance" is a claim according to § 56 SGB III, which exists when an in-company training is conducted and the apprentice does not live with his/her parents.

Other siblings are children who are not yet in a secondary education and need to be financially supported by their parents.

Own income of the siblings (e.g. temporary job, orphan's pension) reduces the allowance to be granted to them. Possibly, a partial allocation of the allowance is possible, but not calculable here.

The starting point is income in the penultimate calendar year, unless the current income is significantly lower. Income is defined as all taxable income; whereby negative income is not offset, and pensions also counted with their tax-exempt part. Special annual payments from employment and tax refunds have to be considered. Income is also the most tax-free income (e.g. unemployment or sickness benefit). Child Benefit, Housing Benefit and Unemployment Benefit II are not considered as income.
